A1 Grand Prix
The A1 Grand Prix (also known as the A1GP) is a form of accredited grand prix racing. Unlike other forms of racing the A1 Grand Prix was formed to allow countries and their racing drivers to compete in races without the financial or technological input of the car constructors. So, in this kind of grand prix racing, drivers compete individually on behalf of their countries of origin and they all drive the same kind of car to the same specification under the same rules.
This kind of racing is considered to give drivers a level playing field - they all compete in the same vehicles under the same regulations. Unlike many other kinds of racing the success of a driver is not down to the money that can be pumped into his car or team. Here, drivers compete on level terms and need to use their own skills to win rather than technological or financial advantage.
At present there are around 22 countries competing in the A1 Grand Prix tournaments. These tournaments take place over three day weekends and are formulated to give drivers of all levels of experience - from rookie drivers to experienced racers - a chance to compete. Any points that they win in races here will be given to the country they represent. As well as qualifying races these tournaments also hold sprint races and feature races.
